I was impressed with the first Panasonic digital camera I bought, and I continue to be impressed with them – they really push the technology forward. When it comes to point and shoot cameras, Canon is playing catch-up to Panasonic in many ways, and Nikon is far behind. I still love my Nikon D300 though – Nikon makes great DSLRs!

Is there a certain special reason you’re getting so many lumix’s? Or do you just like the brand?

  3. ThoughtsMedia Says:

It’s a Japanese company, and it’s pronounced “Nee-kon”, but I always default to pronouncing it the North American way, which is “Nigh-kon”. Ultimately, it doesn’t really matter. :-)

  4. AlJosephTM Says:

how do you really pronounce NIKON?
is it “Naykon” or is it “Neekon”
    i’m confused.

I think if you register online, that’s all you need to do. As long as you keep your receipt so you can prove when you bought it, that’s really the only thing you need.

I’ll try to shoot it this week, but no promises. Yes, I’ll demo the quiet mode.

Nikon is my choice… any other recommendation? I am honestly thinking of buying a camera and honestly I had my eyes on this model of Nikon.

    Nice one.

    @ThoughtsMedia
Hey..umm i have a question about the registering.
I got 2 ESC forms/cards to fill for the lenses that came with the camera.
If i register them online, do i still need to mail Nikon the physical ESC card?
    I’m really confused haha xD

For $40 US dollars you can get the Blue Crane instructional dvd, $20 each.

  11. DavidTheDivine Says:

When is the review coming? Will you demonstrate the quiet mode?

  12. ThoughtsMedia Says:

Yeah, I’m kind of dragging my butt on doing the review video…frankly, I’m so enamoured with my GF-1 I’m having a hard time picking up my D5000. ;-)

I’m not aware of any online tutorials. I’m sure there are some Nikon user forums out there. Best to just get out there and take pictures, and learn how to take better pictures as you go. :-)

I cant wait to see your review on this. I own it but it’s still nice to see what everyone’s take is on it and also I can learn a thing or two I might of missed from the manual.

  15. gn1225 Says:

    Cool!
It’s my first time using an SLR camera..do you think you could recommend some online tutorials?
So far i have watched the one nikon has on its own website on each camera, pretty helpful!
    Thanks once again!

That bundle is $849 at Amazon, so that’s a good price at Costco. The lens on the D5000 in the video is the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G. It’s called a prime lens – it can’t zoom, it’s fixed. But it’s very fast (f/1.8) which means it’s great for low-light shooting.

    Hey, great video! :)
I just got a Nikon D5000 for christmas yesterday! My dad bought it at costco.
It was a bundle pack that came with the camera body and 2 lenses (18-55mm and 55-200mm) and a 4gb SDC card. All for $825 (not including taxes)
Do you think i got a pretty good deal? because i wasnt sure if i should get it before or after the holidays..but they only had 20 left so i got one before they run out.
Also, what lenses are you using in this video? (with the Nikon D5000)

    Thanks!

    i kno what i want for x-mas :)

  20. ThoughtsMedia Says:

No, that’s not right. The beeps can be turned off via the menu system, but the quiet shooting mode actually makes the shutter release quieter. Do you own a D5000? Give it a try.

  21. parrott116 Says:

it doesn’t make the shutter quieter it makes the beep quieter

  22. TheHvaffornoget Says:

Nice demo, thanks! I will probably be buying this camera within a month! :)

  23. Johnnynoknees Says:

Good video of you winging it.. Thx…

  24. ThoughtsMedia Says:

I don’t have the camera in front of me right now, but I think it will turn off the shooting information display when you bring it up to your face – remember this is a DSLR, so it has an optical viewfinder and that’s what you shoot with. I’m unsure if the display shuts off if you have it in Live View mode…quite possibly.

  25. fadondk Says:

@ThoughtsMedia umm.. the sort that turns the LCD off as u come closer to the viewfinder?

im just wondering if the lack of the sensor makes a difference. Does the LCD interfere with ur eyes?. does it waste the battery as it stays on?

sorry my old camera has a sensor, jsut wondering if it makes a huge difference?
